英语词汇有其自身的规律和系统,单词的数量虽然庞大,但构成单词的元素词根、前缀和后缀等却是有限的。常见的词根约有300多个,常见的前缀、后缀约有100多个,如果能熟练掌握这些单词基本构件,就能很容易突破记忆单词的难关。词根、前缀、后缀是构成单词的三个元素,在构词法上叫词素,词根是主要元素,前、后缀为次要元素。三者是扩大词汇量的三把钥匙。因此,在教学中,教师应系统介绍一些关于词根、前缀和后缀的教学内容,同时适当举例,并引导学生举一反三,例如:通过加了前缀un-,in-,dis-,mis-等构成了具否定意义的词和加了后缀-ness,-ity,-dom等形容词名词化的词的归类分析,让学生懂得构词的一般规则,使学生能在此基础上,知一返三,触类旁通。这样,学生学习新词汇时,就能省时省力,同时还能复习和巩固旧词汇,降低词汇记忆的难度,帮助学生有效地记忆单词。
