8．third degree 逼供；拷问

在美国，警察过去常常对无权无势的普通人使用刑讯逼供。人们遂借（the）third degree喻指（警察的）疲劳询问（或逼供），同时还把“逮捕”和“入狱”分别婉称为the first degree（第一级）和the second degree（第二级）。third degree常和动词get/give连用,作get the third degree和give someone a/the degree。

可见，在主语中可以大胆地使用定语从句丰富句子意思。

作者甚至提到了自己痛哭流涕这样具体的无关细节，同时又异想天开说美国总统上火星等等，这些都和文章的主题无关。
