【当主动词时，“be”在性质上属于接系动词(The Linking Verb)，后面要有名词、形容词、地方副词或短语作补足语(The Complement)。例如：
1. The man is a science teacher.
这个男子是一位科学教师
2. Mary\'s new dresses are colourful.
玛丽的新衣服色彩鲜艳
3. I have been there before.
我以前去过那里
4. My mother is watching TV in the room.
母亲现在在客厅看电视
这四个都是陈述句，可以变成疑问句，方法简单，把主语和“be”或助动词对换位置即可：

7. Have I been there before?
8. Is mother in the kitchen now?
当“be”要在祈使句中出现时，它必须借重助动词“do”或“don\'t”之助，如：

“Be”有两种缩写法，如下：

13. You\'re not.. aren\'t...
但“am + not”的缩写法只有一个：

谈过了“be”作主动词的功能，现在看看“be”作助动词时，有些什么用法：
【1.】“Be + 现在分词”以组成进行式时态(Continuous Tenses)，如：

【说明：】to talk over（讲座，商量）指讲座、会商尚未实施的计划或问题，或以商谈说服，使别人赞成自己的计划。后面的受词如果是名词，应放在over之后，如果是代名词，则放在over之前，如My husband talked me over. （我的丈夫说服了我。）

2. Get Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed=wake up in a bad mood
起床时心情很坏。
范例对话:
A: What\'s the matter with Bernard today? He started shouting from the moment he stepped into the office.
B: I don\'t know. He usually doesn\'t act that way at all. I guess he got up on the wrong side of the bed.
A: Just because he woke up in a bad mood is no reason for him to be so cross and to go around shouting at everybody.
B: Hopefully he\'ll relax as the day goes on.

美国式的炒鱿鱼是接斧头，表示被解雇。
范例对话:
A: I feel sorry for Richard. He was feeling quite depressed when I ran into him.

B: That\'s strange. He\'s always been a conscientious worker. I wonder why they dismissed him from his job?
A: Evidently he had a disagreement on company policies with one of the top executives.

当然粗俗的俚语在商务会话中是不允许的。另外，书面用语如“ne ertheless，furthermore，in addition，utmost”等非但不会让考官欣赏，反而显得做作、不自然。正所谓“过犹不及”，要做到恰到好处，必须对词汇和短语的色彩有精确体会。
